As you start to work on that “New You” this season don’t forget your feet!

The feet tend to be one of the most neglected areas of the body in terms of overall health and this can have drastic effects.  This winter, try these to better take care of the foundation of your body

1. Moisturize your feet daily-studies show applying moisturizing CREAM (not lotion) within the first 3 minutes of getting out of the shower or bath will allow moisture to be maintained in the feet much better than any other time.

2. Use a pumice stone on a regular basis in the shower to keep callus areas filed down.

3. Wear shoes in the house-if you grew up in a house like mine you never wear shoes in the house.  However, I recommend many patients purchase a new pair of athletic shoes that they only wear in the house (to keep clean) but provide support to the foot and related structures.  Key prevention for plantar fasciitis and arthritis pain.

4. Stretch daily-performing Achilles tendon stretches are important to maintaining flexibility reducing symptoms and precursors to plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis.  The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body and when tight can cause many foot conditions.
