Dry cracked skin

Dry cracked skin

Winter is very dry and so skin at this point in the season also dries out leaving you susceptible to itchy dry, cracked skin or asteototic eczema. What you see is dry looking skin, possible fissures (deep cracks) and scaling of skin. This doesn’t just affect the feet as it may occur on other areas of the body such as the lower legs and hands as well. Certain systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypothyroidism can contribute to xerosis as they can affect vasomotor function to the skin. Things to avoid: salts in the bath, hot water, frequent bathing and harsh soaps. Keep your skin hydrated, make sure to drink plenty of water, and use lotion often especially after a bath or shower while the skin is still slightly wet.
