... and in my opinion one of the most under-treated conditions we see.  Often times patients present to the ED and they get a simple little brace and are told to ice and elevate.  The issue, is there are 3 grades to a sprain.  Grade 1 is a stretching of the ligament, Grade 2 is a partial tear, and Grade 3 is a full rupture involving one or up to all 3 of the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.  The treatment listed above is appropriate for Grade 1 only.  Grade 2 and Grade 3 sprains should be treated with adequate immobilization in a cast boot or cast to allow the ligament to heal appropriately.  If you suffered an ankle sprain give our experts at Indiana Podiatry Group a call.
