Having foot surgery?  Did you know we have created a great guide to the surgery process from start to finish?  Foot surgery can cause anxiety, fear, and apprehension, mainly because we use the foot so much.  Common foot procedures include straightening bunions, hammertoes, and crooked little toes, as well as removing pinched nerves, cysts, and tissue masses.  While each surgery is unique in its own right, there are some common things between them that define the surgical process.

Our guide covers what one can expect from every stage in the surgical process, including the surgical planning, the preoperative preparation, the morning of the surgery, and the recovery process.  It can help put a familiar face on this strange process, and ease pre-surgical anxiety by explaining the process plainly.

Our foot surgery guide can be found on our website by clicking on the linked text, or by visiting the Patient Instructions tab off of the main page.

Is this a question you often ask after removing your shoes at the end of the day?  Chances are, many of you have experienced this at some point, and some may experience it daily.  Although the little toe or the toe next to the big toe are usually involved, this redness can be found on any of the toes and can potentially be a sign of a foot problem waiting to happen.

When the skin becomes reddened while wearing shoes, the most typical culprit is a poorly fitting shoe combined with a toe that is out of position.  The toe may be contracted (as seen with hammertoes), or, in the case of the little toe, it may be contracted and rotated.  If the toes sit in a shoe that has a tight toe space, as often seen in many styles of pointed or narrow dress shoes, the shoe will rub against the prominent toe and irritate the skin.  Ultimately, this may lead to a painful corn over time, and in diabetics can lead to a serious skin wound.

The simple solution to avoid eventual pain is to wear shoes that are roomy enough to fit the toes comfortably.  Toe padding can also be used, but often this simply increases the bulk of the toe in the shoe.  For permanent relief, some people require a simple outpatient surgical procedure to straighten the toe and return it to a proper position.  This fixes the underlying problem, and gives one greater latitude in what shoe they can wear.  If you are having this problem, come see the foot specialists at Indiana Podiatry Group for an evaluation and discussion of your treatment options.

Indiana Podiatry Group would like to announce the arrival of Neuremedy, a medical supplement designed to help treat peripheral neuropathy.  Many people suffer from feet that feel like they are numb, burning, stinging, tingling, or feel like pins and needles are coursing through them.  Many of these people have diabetes, and a complication called diabetic neuropathy.  Others have this condition due to nutritional deficiencies, or may have it simply for no known reason.  Recent studies have shown that those with peripheral neuropathy, as the condition is called, may have low blood levels of the essential nutrient thiamine (vitamin B1). Thiamine is essential for the nerves to function properly. Food alone may not sufficient to elevate the levels of the nutrient enough to counter this deficiency in the nerve tissue.  Neuremedy was created for this purpose, as it has a more bioactive form of thiamine called benfotiamine. Benfotiamine has been used since the early 1960's to successfully treat peripheral neuropathy in Asia and Europe. Neuremedy does not have any adverse effects, nor does it interact with any medication.

This product is safe, effective, and can work in as little as a few days, although some people may require a month or two before the benefit is noticed.  It does not work in everyone, like any medication used to treat peripheral neuropathy symptoms, and has results that vary based on each individual.  However, unlike other neuropathy medications, there are no debilitating side effects and no known medication reactions, so there is no harm to be had by simply trying it.  In those it is effective for, the amount of relief obtained may be substantial and possibly life-changing depending on the severity of the nerve pain.

Neuremedy can be purchased in our offices for a reasonable cost, typically far less than the copayment for many prescription neuropathy medications
